Suspended professor is collateral damage lawyers say

The University of Michigan’s College of로투스 홀짝 Arts & Sciences suspended President David Myers on Monday for four months after the professor was placed on administrative leave after a faculty member said she was subjected to sexual harassment by her then-deputy.

The suspension comes after another woman accused the professor of touching her inappropriately at a party.

The woman said that in 2007, she was invited to sit on the third floor of Myers’ building in Ann Arbor, but that when she left, she saw Myers kissing and touching another woman he knew, her account of how he touched her. The woman says Myers was the one who pushed her against a wall and kissed her.

Her account drew sharp criticism on both sides of the aisle, particularly those of Michigan State University President Mark Schlissel, who told reporters:

“I have received numerous complaints from individuals around the country about Professor Myers, and none of these allegations are worthy of immediate dismissal. I have reviewed them thoroughly and find them to be baseless.”

McLaughlin said Myers has a responsibility to act immediately to address any allegations and he has been suspended indefinitely. Schlissel also announced on Monday that he was suspending Myers for three semesters after receiving additional complaints.

McLaughlin said he’s surprised Myers didn’t face criminal charges because he believes he was innocent.

“That being said, I believe he violated his duty of care. I believe that he committed professional misconduct by making allegations and making false statements,” McLaughlin said. “He violated the rules of the university by taking actions with the intent of creating a hostile environment for an entire class, as opposed to just one person. I find this extremely distasteful and unacceptable, and I hope, eventually, others will recognize it as a serious problem.”

Schlissel, meanwhile, said he was shocked and saddened by the alleged harassment and that it caused him “emotional anguish and disquiet,” but believes he’s acted appropriately by putting Myers on administrative leave.

On the school’s website, it says the university has a “zero tolerance” policy for sexual harassment and “we are committed to a community of respect where no one feels isolated and entitled, including faculty, students, staff, or faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences.”
