Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has repeatedly warned that his followers are behind the spate of the deaths, while politicians including Borno state’s defence minister, Sirajul Haqqani, have long denied links with his group.
Shekau, who is also fighting the Islamist insurgency in neighbouring Cameroon, said on June 17 that there were 100 targets in the country under control of Nigeria-based fighters but said they were not his command.
On June 23, the leader of the military wing of Boko Haram, Sambo Umar, claimed the group’s leaders were behind the murders.

Nigerian forces are fighting Boko Haram along two fronts in neighbouring Niger and Chad, where most of the militants live.
